We are to share alarming results of the Confidential Bullying And Harassment Survey with Bedford Borough Council.
Due to the serious nature of the survey results talks with Bedford Council should be at the highest possible level says GMB.
We plan to share the results of a confidential survey into bullying and harassment of members who work for Bedford Borough Council.
GMB conducted the survey during December 2013 and January 2014. This was after GMB had received an increased number of calls from its members claiming they had been bullied and unfairly treated.
GMB have now assessed the results. The findings do show a culture of bullying and unfair treatment within Bedford Borough Council.
Martin Foster, GMB Beds County Branch Secretary said, “The results of the GMB survey are even worse than we thought it would be. No less than 58% of respondent claim that they have been harassment, bullied or discriminated against. Of these 45% claimed a council manager bullied them while another 31% felt bullied by senior management.
It also showed that even though GMB members recognised that an Equal Opportunity Policy was in place at the council, 62% felt the policy is not being properly applied. An alarming 20% of those responding claimed they had been a victim of bulling and/or harassment due to their disability.
Most shocking of all 90% of the respondents said they would not be confident in reporting bullying or harassment to their council manger. This may not come as a surprise when 76% believe they are being bullied by managers.
GMB members made comments like “management clearly do not believe in transparency, dignity at work or respect for others but instead prefer to use adopt bully-boy tactics.
GMB will speak urgently with Bedford Council. Due to the serious nature of the survey results the talks should be at the highest possible level.”
