We the undersigned petition the council to give serious consideration to introducing the Living Wage at Central Bedfordshire Council, including in contracted-out services, as a permanent part of basic pay for all staff who would otherwise be below this rate.
The Living Wage is a recommended rate of pay that takes into account the true cost of living in the UK. As you may know, it is calculated annually by academics at Loughborough University based on the items that people need for a “minimum acceptable standard of living”. Single-year increases are capped relative to changes in average earnings. In November 2014 it went up to £7.85 per hour.
