In 1908, against a backdrop of terrible working conditions & exploitation, 15,000 women took to the streets in New York protesting for shorter hours, better pay & voting rights. The next year the Socialist Party of America announced a National Women’s Day was held in 1911, and more than a million people turned out to tallies in Europe.
For most of the 20th century International Women’s Day was acknowledged and celebrated by people at the grassroots level, a rallying point for social justice. It wasn’t until 1975 – International Women’s Year – that the United Nations adopted International Women’s Day (IWD).
IWD celebrated annually on 8 March, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for advancing gender equality.
CBC staff can access the Women’s Network, that meet regularly on Microsoft Teams. The network provides an inclusive environment, where they support each other and discuss topics affecting women at CBC and beyond. They are focused on growing the network, developing confidence and influencing wider change.
Topics of interest include:
- Awareness of the gender pay gap
- Development of female talent
- Cultural support for women in the organisation
- Career development
- Women’s health
They welcome anyone interested to come and join the next meeting – all are welcome!
CBC are taking the opportunity to celebrate IWD by holding an in-person event at Priory House this Wednesday for all staff. Please see link below for all the details:
